Shady moving companies have been a constant thorn in the side of so many of our clients. We have heard horror story after horror story about broken or missing items, exorbitant add-on fees, late deliveries and one client was even ghosted. Some movers are great, but some are straight up con artists. Unfortunately, sometimes it is hard to tell them apart, and once they show their true colors, it is often too late. Moving can be a stressful and overwhelming experience, and choosing the right moving company can make all the difference.

1. Do your research: Before hiring a moving company, research the company's reputation and read customer reviews. Look for red flags, such as a high number of complaints or negative reviews.

2. Check for licensing and insurance: Make sure the moving company is licensed and insured. This will protect you in case of damages or accidents during the move.

3. Get multiple quotes: Get quotes from several different moving companies to compare prices and services. Be wary of companies that give you a quote over the phone without seeing your belongings.

4. Watch out for hidden fees: Some moving companies may charge hidden fees, such as fuel surcharges or packing fees. Be sure to ask about all fees upfront to avoid any surprises.

   

5. Pay attention to the contract: Before signing a contract, read it carefully and make sure you understand all the terms and conditions. If there is something you don't understand, ask for clarification.

6. Be cautious with online booking: Be aware of online booking platforms that may offer cheap prices, but the movers they contract may not be legitimate or reliable.

7. Trust your instincts: If something seems too good to be true or if a company makes you feel uneasy, trust your instincts and look for another moving company.

8. Don’t pay them everything up front. They have all of your belongings if you don’t pay. If they ghost you and take all of your stuff, you have nothing to hold them accountable.

9. A reputable mover should provide you a pamphlet with your rights and responsibilities. By law, you are required to be given this by your mover prior to your move.

Sometimes no matter how careful you are, you still run into trouble. If you find yourself a victim of a shady moving company, you have rights. First, you can file a complaint with the Department of Transportation. If you think arbitration or mediation is possible, you can get help with that as well.
